In The Beginning

February 26, 2017 Sermon

Evolution, Creation, God, Science, – are these contradicting? Does belief in scientific data hinder a relationship with God? Science has given us much; medical advances, agricultural advantages and information about our world that helps us to understand and protect it. It has also given evidence that suggests against the biblical story of creation, and it’s method has scrutinized the content of God’s word to an extent that a wide chasm has grown between the scientific and religious communities. Do we need to turn against science to turn to God?

I’ve been a Christian my entire life, and I struggle with this even today. I’ve even told myself that God doesn’t care what we believe about creation, as long as we believe in him. Yet God states that the bible is truth, not that only some sections are true. Whether I believe in scientific discoveries or not, one thing that I have learned in my walk with God is that the limits of science do not apply to him. Just a few weeks ago, my husband locked his keys – along with his work computer and luggage for a trip – in the trunk, and a valet key that wasn’t supposed to open the trunk, opened it after we prayed that it would. Scientifically, that should not have been possible. Likewise, if science tells us that with the data we have today, the earth should have taken millions of years, rather than six days to create, that doesn’t mean that it was impossible for God.

God’s message to us in the bible is to trust him, not man. I think part of what that means is that we should not look at God like he is just a man. We should not hold him to the same limitations. If we believe in God – the creator – than we believe he also created the methods, rules and processes that sustain and develop life as we know it today, and as the creator of those processes, it should not be unbelievable that he overrides them from time to time.

God speaks through his word, and we can trust that the Bible is the best source to read it. As stated in Timothy 3:16-17 , “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
