The Season of Peace and Joy

I feel like I’ve been mentioning God’s peace a lot in recent posts. I’m sure you’ve heard it before – that if you believe in God, you will receive peace. The bible refers to that peace as “A peace that transcends all understanding.” But stop and think about what that means.

I’ve definitely felt that peace before in my life. Knowing and that God is in control allows me to trust that he will take care of me and my family through what ever happens, but I would consider us very blessed. We have two healthy boys, a great community around us, and we’ve always been provided for. If I were to look at my life from an outside perspective, I would expect myself to be at peace.

Last week I met someone that I would not expect peace from. She had a daughter with multiple birth defects, which – among many other complications – took away her ability to see and hear. The mother told us her experience at the hospital, when she realized that something was wrong, and how she was able to pull together the strength to care for this child just hours after giving birth. What struck me about this amazing woman, was her peace. I could imagine that most in her situation would be on the verge of a breakdown from worry and lack of sleep, but she had a calm presence about her. It went beyond understanding – that someone could be in the middle of a trial and still be at peace, but that’s how God’s peace works. He doesn’t always prevent bad things from happening, but he is there with us when they do.
