Why do we have to choose?
When I was young, I thought that being Christian meant that I was going to have to give up the things in life that I enjoyed – the things that made me fit in with my friends. I focused on how much I was going to have to change my life to become a good Christian. If the bible says “come as you are,” why do we have to change the way we make choices?
We have to make a choice to follow God, and that will affect the choices that we make moving forward. And I’m going to be honest – the result can feel like a train wreck. The choices we make to follow God could bring about major changes in our lives; job changes, moves, and the end of some relationships, but the important thing to remember is that God always has good things planned for us. If God wants us to make a difficult change, he will guide us through the transition, and when we come through the other side, we’ll see that our lives are better for it.
The choices we make before we follow God can be toxic – even if they feel right. When we choose to follow God, he will call us to clean house of our past choices that will eventually cause us harm, and it’s not going to be easy. It could be frustrating, scary and even painful, but that shouldn’t discourage us from choosing God. It’s like if you had cancer, and had to choose to undertake painful chemotherapy treatments in order to live. Would you forgo treatment so you could be comfortable for the short term, or would you make the choice that would cure you? It’s the same with God. if you choose him, he will heal you.
