Fighting back with prayer

It’s a battle ground out there. Politics, violence and broken homes at every turn. How can we fight back? Do we have a chance at improving our environment, or are we helpless?

There is so much injustice today that victimizes people based on race, gender or religious affiliation. I’ve been looking at these situations and defining a “bad guy” – the person or entity to blame, but what if there isn’t one? I think what we perceive is a series of half-truths, of one-sided stories. It’s our nature to see things this way – clouded by our own experiences and judgements. We instantly side with the one that we relate to the most and feel anger or resentment against the opposing force. That’s why we cannot fight alone. That’s why we need to turn to God in prayer.

If we depend only on ourselves, we will not initiate change. It would be like fighting the symptoms alone, rather than the virus. Yet if we rely on God, things start to change. We cannot rely on governments, elected officials or even ourselves alone. We must pray. We need to pray for our nation, our people, our families. We must pray for healing. We’re trying to pay back injustice with more injustice, hate with more hate, violence with more violence. This will not heal our nation. Prayer is our only hope for healing – our only hope for peace.
