Jumping into the Lion’s Den

I meet with a group of very talented people for brunch every other month and one of the women has themed her year with the phrase “Get in there!” I love it – because it’s the idea of letting go of all inhibitions and taking action. Most of us in the group could apply that to learning a new skill, applying for a new job, or deciding on a career change, but I think it could also be a great christian mantra.

Last Sunday’s sermon started with the story of Benaiah, who killed a lion in a pit on a snowy day. The significance of the situation was that Benaiah willingly jumped into the pit knowing that the lion was there. Nowadays, we don’t have to worry about conquering  lions, but the story still applies to Christians today. Pastor Zedick stated, “Christians are more known by what they are against, rather than what they are for.” or rather, by what they do because of what they’re for. That’s why it’s important to take action when we feel called by God to do so.

It can be hard to tell when someone around us is hurting – especially if we don’t know the person well. Our pastor has been called many times to engage with complete strangers to offer help, prayer or just an encouraging conversation. Every time, the person needed that interaction. For me, I have to swallow a huge lump of fear before I can walk up to some stranger, offer help and encouragement or start talking about God. I’m terrified that I’ll roll out with come cliché phrase or say something dumb that will put someone off. I imagine it’s difficult for most, but if God sends us, he’ll give us the right words – if we listen. God uses imperfect people like us to do his work. So it’s time to get in there!
