A Mother’s Role

May 8 Sermon, 2016

Celebrating mother’s day for myself is still a foreign idea to me. I’ve only been a mother for a few years so I haven’t had time to get used to it. Plus, before having children, I was the least nurturing person I knew – especially when it came to children. So that changed when I had my boys, either by instinct or divine intervention, and I love them more than I had ever imagined.

Love. Is there anything more important for a mother to have? I think about children in the foster system, abandoned or taken away from mothers who could not care for them. I cannot imagine the pain they must feel. My mother is an amazing women that taught us about God’s love through her everyday life. She is always there for us, and we are truly blessed to have that. What about those who didn’t feel loved by their mothers? Can they recognize God’s love if they haven’t experienced a parent’s or caregiver’s love?

Pastor Zedick spoke of three mothers from the bible that changed history because of their great love for their children. I think that is God’s calling for mothers – to show love. Through that our children feel safe and secure, and it opens their hearts to better understand God’s love for them. Luke Chapter 11 talks about a parent’s love verses God’s love. Jesus said, “If you then, evil as you are, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask him!”

It’s hard for me to imagine a love stronger than what I feel for my children, but God’s love for all of us is infinitely greater!
